San Diego, CA…or as I call it, Katholville

We pushed from LBC to San Diego not interested in the chaos LA can bring. If we didn’t have 2 labs, and a 31′ Airstream to tow, we probably would have checked out some LA stuff.

We were welcomed in Sandy Eggo by Jill and I immediately thought she was playing a joke on us about where to park the Airstream. When I realized she wasn’t, we gave it a try, but the super steep grade, and 0 turning radius made it impossible. She then showed me the next option, which was worse…. but we got it in!!!!!!!! And we almost didn’t leave. 🙂

Such an awesome time in Sandy Eggo (El Cajon specifically), and Uncle John and Jill were wonderful hosts! We got to see pretty much all the cousins, uncles, aunts, friends, and peacocks. Lots of peacocks!

Long Beach City!

The RV park by the Long Beach Marina is very, very nice. Great pools, amenities, and most importantly, you can walk to tons of cool stuff. It was not cheap, $55 per night, but it was worth it purely for the location.

When we arrived, I noticed two other very similar 31′ Airstreams parked. One was just two spots from us! As Claire and I were getting all backed in, a truck approached us slowly, and then an older man hopped out and walked up to my open window and leaned in. He had a look of rage on his face… and he had to have been 80. I was scared. He said “Why are you taking my airstream?” I thought he was joking, so I laughed and said “Hey I’m Leo, nice to meet you”…. he wasn’t having ANY of that!! And continued to press me “WHY ARE YOU TAKING MY AIRSTREAM!?!?” Finally I realized he really thought our Airstream was his…and I hopped out to show him it wasn’t his… needless to say, he was devastated with embarrassment and hobbled back to his truck to drive two spots down to his Airstream. He REALLY should not be towing an 8,000lbs trailer down the road………

My old friend Hans came by for a visit and we had a great night on the town!

Santa Barbara or bust!

We loved Santa Barbara! The first campground we tried to stay at was a state park, just southeast of the city… we pulled up, and they told us they had room, but it was going to be $77 per night! We were in shock. It wasn’t even that close to the city (15 minute drive). We declined the spot, and turned the big rig around and head back toward town to check out the Fairground option that was only $40.

We had a lot of fun in the city, but I am always shocked with how expensive this place is. I guess you pay for the nice spots in California, and this was no exception. We found a great dog park on our last day… wish we would have found it earlier!

This was definitely one of our “adventures” along the “adventure!” Claire didn’t think camping on the beach was a good idea, but I wasn’t hearing any of it! I followed the instructions on letting air out of the tires, kept the speed up, and whooooop…. came to a huge stop in the sand. I felt very deflated! Fortunately some young bucks came by and got us unstuck, at which point Claire said “We are going back, right?” and I wasn’t having ANY of it again!

We stayed two nights right on the beach. Beautiful doesn’t even begin to describe it. Cosmo and Gus were in heaven playing in the Pacific and running in the beautiful sand.

The Hearst Castle!

Just a modest 174 rooms, but again, unbelievable views, and tons of museum quality art and decor (the dining table is Walnut and is 500 years old!)

William Hearst is known for being the first “media mogul“ but he was actually the son of the 10th richest man in the country.  Williams mother said before her passing “don’t give the land to William… he will do something excessive with it”……. well………………..
